Currey Cattle firmly believes in implementing a health program for the cattle both at the receiving barn and at their final destination. The implementation of a health plan immediately upon arrival at Currey Cattle has lead to a reduction in the loss of cattle due to sickness and death.

The average herd size in Tennessee is 15 head. The owner of the cattle is generally a part time cattleman and most likely receives the majority of his income from another occupation. Consequently, most of the cattle have not received any kind of vaccination program and are susceptible to viruses and bacteria.

At Currey Cattle we believe the sooner a vaccination program is in place the less likely a cattle owner will suffer losses due to sickness. Currey Cattle has a custom built chute designed by C & S which helps us to administer the health program quickly and effectively to every stocker. The health plan consists of a four shot program using vaccines from Pfizer which includes

1. TSV-2-modified live Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) & Parainfluenza (PI-3) nasal spray

2. Bovishield 4-bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), bovine virus diarrhea (BVD), parainfluenza3 (PI-3) & bovine respiratory syncytial viruses (BRSV) administered 2ml intramuscularly

3. Pasturella Haemolytica Bactrin-Toxiod administered 2ml intramuscularly

4. Antibiotics

Once the cattle have passed through the health program, they are turned out in one of 18 grass traps where they have access to native grass bales and square bales. When the cattle arrive at their final destination, they should receive another round of antibiotics, blackleg, a vitamin shot containing Selenium and Vitamin E and worming. Currey Cattle recommends that a follow up revaccination of the pasturella and bovishield-4 shot should be implemented within seven to ten days after the arrival of the cattle.
